Charles Houston Smith, a former resident of Gravette, died April 15, 1986. He was the son of the late Erva And Mary Barnwell Smith.

He attended Gravette schools and served in the U. S. Navy. After his return from service in 1946 he married Mary Zoe Hammontree. He retired in 1977 after 30 years service with Claycoma Ford Plant.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Zoe (June 16 would have been their 40th wedding anniversary); one daughter, Barbara Louise of Independence, Mo.; three sisters, Mabel Jordan of Gentry; Erma Hayre of Kansas City, Ks.; and Hazel Cash of Birmingham, Alabama.

Services were held April 17 in Kansas City, Mo., with graveside services April 18 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Gravette.

Mary Zoe (Smith) Shelley, age 95, of Independence, MO, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2022. She was born March 9, 1927 in Oklahoma City, OK to Earl and Lelan (Ackley) Hammontree.

Mary Zoe retired in 1991 from the Nazarene Publishing House - Lillenas Publishing Co. as supervisor of the Customer Service Department. She was an ordained Deacon and Elder in the Presbyterian Church, a member of Trinity Presbyterian church in Independence, MO and formerly of the Van Brunt Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, MO where she taught children’s Sunday School for many years. Mary Zoe also enjoyed her time with activities of Four Season’s senior citizens group.

Mary Zoe was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Houston Smith and Cletis Shelley; brother, Lawrence Hammontree; and step-son Charles Shelley.

She is survived by daughter Barbara Smith; step children Gary (Debbie) Shelley, Linda (Lynn) Smith, Patti (Jim) Ash; and daughter-in-law, Joy Shelley; brothers George and Joe Hammontree; sister-in-laws Erma Blackburn and Hazel Cash.

Visitation on Wednesday, July 27, 11:00am-1:00pm, funeral service 1:00pm, at Charter Funerals, 5000 Blue ridge Cutoff. Burial will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery, July, 28, 1:30 PM, in Gravette, Arkansas.
