SMITH, John Franklin - J.F. Smith died Saturday night at his home, southwest corner of Fourth and Elm streets. Mr. Smith had been in failing health for the past two years tho his condition was not considered serious until about ten days before his death but the end came suddenly and was quite unexpected. Funeral services were held at the residence Monday afternoon at 2:30 and were conducted by Rev. Robert L. Selle, pastor of the First M.E. church. Burial was in the Rogers Cemetery. J.F. Smith and family came to Rogers some twelve years ago from Canon City, Colorado where they had lived for two years. They went to Colorado from Monroe City, Mo. where all of the children were born and Mr. Smith was in the newspaper business. He had been editor of the Missouri Farmer and is known to the older newspaper men of that section. John Franklin Smith was born on March 14, 1855 at Athens, Ohio and at the time of his death was 73 years, six months and fifteen days old. His parents moved to Marion county, Mo. in his younger days and he grew to manhood there. After finishing his collegiate education at Ingleside and St. Paul's in Palmyra, Mo. he taught school for ten years; then read law and was admitted to the bar at Paris, Mo. He practiced law for many years and also spent many years as editor, owner and business manager of various newspapers. At the age of twenty-five Mr. Smith married Miss Clara M. Kiekbusch in Palmyra, Mo. who survives him. To this union were born six children, five of whom are living: Rosa Mae, now the wife of Rev. J.M. Hornback of Triplett, Mo.; Clarence H. Smith, Miss Elma D. Smith and J. Frank Smith, all of Rogers, and Grace M., now Mrs. Garth Young, Daytona Beach, Florida. When twenty years of age Mr. Smith united with the Baptist church and had since been a member of that denomination. He was president of the Busy Men's Bible Class of the First M.E. church of this city at the time of his death and was present at the class meeting just two weeks previous to his death. He was much interested in Sunday School work and had been a faithful attendant and worker for more than 65 years. Mr. Smith has been a highly respected citizen wherever he had made his home and the Democrat editor enjoyed their occasional chats as he was well posted on all current events of the day and had a fund of valuable information regarding the early days of the middle west where he had taught at a number of places.
