GENTRY - J.D. Smith, 84, of Gentry died Dec. 20, 2005, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville. He was born Oct. 21, 1921, in Rowell to W.R. and Clara Thornton Smith. He was first elected to the Gentry City Council in 1955 and served for 15 years. He returned to the City Council in 1983 and served through 1986, when he was elected mayor. He was elected to the City Council again in 1997 and was chairman of the finance committee and member of the water and waste-water committee. He was employed by the Benton County Assessor's Office for five years. He was named Alderman of the Year for the state of Arkansas and was named Citizen of the Year by the Gentry Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Lions Club for 41 years and had the distinction of having a perfect attendance for those years. He was a member of American Legion Post 159 and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was one of the survivors of Normandy on Omaha Beach on D-Day.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Ratcliff, in 2000.

Survivors include one daughter, Clara Joyce Smith Garrett of Gentry; two grandsons, Matthew Garrett of Paragould and Denny Garrett of North Litle Rock; one sister, Gertie Phelps of Mena.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Gentry United Methodist Church with Lonnie Nelsen and Brad Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Gentry Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Gentry United Methodist Church Building Fund. Arrangements are by Wasson Funeral Home in Siloam Springs, online at www.wassonfuneralhome.com
