Siloam Springs Historian Maggie Smith Dies At 92

SPRINGDALE — Friends remembered Maggie Aldridge Smith on Monday as the town historian who contributed to the cultural life of Siloam Springs.

Smith, 92, died Monday at Grace Living Center in Jenks, Okla.

She had lived in Siloam Springs since 1960, moving from Kansas City, Mo., and was active in a variety of organizations during her more than four decades in Siloam Springs. Beside her church work, she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Siloam Springs, as well as the Women's Missionary Association, Pen Women, Daughters Of The American Revolution, Benton County Historical Society, the Poets' Round Table of Oklahoma and Arkansas and AARP.

She was an author, poet, genealogist and local historian.

"She's been an icon in Siloam Springs for years," said M.L. "Moose" Van Poucke, mayor of Siloam Springs. "She was a lady who felt for people. She spent many, many years getting things done and restorting things at the Sager Arts Center."

Smith, who wrote a book on the history Of Siloam Springs, was also instrumental in taking the Siloam Springs Museum to a higher level, according to Don Warden, administrator of the museum.

She was a direct descendant of the Sager family, Warden said, and authored a book on the family. Sager Creek, which winds through downtown Siloam Springs, is named after the family.

"We still refer to her book quite a bit," Warden said, "She was heavily involved in the museum itself. In fact, she wrote the grant that allowed the museum to hire a full-time director."

Prior to Smith's grant in 1991, the museum had been run on a volunteer basis.

"She just lived a block from the museum when I first got here," Warden said. "People wanting to donate things to the museum would bring them to her and she would bring them to the museum."

"She was the person everybody turned to for family history and genealogy," Warden said. "She was also very religious, very strong in her faith. A lot of that went into the poetry she wrote."

The city owes a lot to Smith's efforts, Van Pouche said, "We will certainly miss her very much."

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wasson Funeral Home in Siloam Springs.
