SMITH, Joseph M. - Joseph M. Smith was born on a farm in Switzerland county, Indiana February 5, 1839, died in Rogers, Arkansas January 29, 1923, lacking a week of being 84 years old. In early life he was a Baptist but upon his family moving to a community where there was no Baptist church he became a Methodist and for some 68 years he lived a Christian life in that church that lasted seven days every week. In the 37 years that the writer has known him, most of the time very intimately, he has never heard it even asserted that he ever wronged any person in any way. In 1860 he was married to Miss Lutherie Smith, who remained a faithful wife to him for 60 years, her death occurring in October 1920. Of their three children, the son died in infancy; Mrs. F.H. Duff, the younger daughter, passed away in February 1917; and Mrs. E.J. Linton, the elder daughter, preceded her mother by six months. In the Civil war he was for three years a Union soldier. In 1884 he moved from Indiana to Kansas where he resided until coming to Benton county in the spring of 1893. Since that time he has resided in or around Rogers until the time of his death. Excepting two grandsons, now in California, the entire family now sleep in the family lot in Rogers cemetery All were faithful Christians and all looked to him who has now gone for counsel and courage. May his good works live long and help many.
