Eld. Archibald G. Smith was born in Pike county, Indiana, Jan. 26, 1823 and lived in Southern Indiana until the year 1843 when he emigrated to N.W. Arkansas and located near Fayetteville in Washington county. On the 5th day of Jan: 1845 he was married to Miss Hannah Steele, Eld. John Holcomb officiating. On the 14th day of Sept. 1852 he professed a hope in Christ and joined the Regular Baptist church of Christ, called Shiloh, in Washington county, Ark. the 2nd Sunday in July 1856 and was baptised the 2nd Sunday in August following by Eld. William Ingram and continued a faithful and zealous member of said church while he lived. Soon after he joined the church he was liberated to exercise in public his gift of preaching with which he felt impressed, he was ordained on Saturday before the 2nd Sunday in Nov. 1867 to the work of the ministry by the following presbytery: Elds. John Holcomb, Thomas Dodson and Norman F. Goodrich, and Deacons John Pearson and Stewart Taylor. Uncle Archie, as he was familiarly known, was a man that could not be moved from his convictions of what he considered right and just, firm in his belief of the doctrines of his church and was a firm advocate of the "Faith that was once delivered to the Saints," and even when nearing his last hours on earth he said: "I have nothing to take back or regret that I have said in reference to pointing sinners to the Lamb of God as the only source of Salvation." After the death of the pastor of his church {Eld. Jno. Holcomb) he, with Eld. N.F. Goodrich, were chosen associate pastors of the church which place he filled while he lived. He was chosen Moderator of Washington Association of Regular Baptists in 1885 and re-elected in 1886 but owing to bad health was unable to attend the Association after 1886. His work as pastor of his church was ever faithful and efficient; he was ever a man of peace and in his rulings as Moderator he was ever kind and indulgent. He always contended for the strict disciplline as laid down by Christ and his Apostles. In the death of Bro. Smith the church has lost a faithful member and a beloved and devoted pastor, his family a kind husband and father and the community an esteemed and respected citizen. He was beloved by all who knew him; but our loss is his gain. Knowing that his eternal departure was near at hand he requested that at some appropriate time his funeral should be preached by Elds. N.F. Goodrich and Jesse R. Loving from 2 Timothy, 4 c. and 6, 7, and 8 v. During his entire affliction, which was long and severe he had all the care and attention that a beloved companion and children together with brethren, relatives and friends could afford, he talked frequently of his approaching death. On the evening of Tuesday at 25 minutes before 11 o'clock on the 24th of January 1888 his sufferings ended and his spirit returned to God who gave it. His companion and children have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement. In the midst of his physical sufferings {cancer of the face} he was ever patient and hopeful, never murmuring at his lot but endured with true christian fortitude the ills of this life, looking for and waiting the time when the Lord would call him home. Wm. H. Holcomb, F.A. Atwood.

In the obituary of Eld. A.G. Smith in last week's issue the name, Steele, should have been Stelle; and in the 69th line the word "eternal" should be omitted and inserted in the 68th line after the word "his."
