ELM SPRINGS — John Hugh Smith, 80, of Elm Springs died Nov. 22, 2008, at Springdale. He was born May 10, 1928, in Elm Springs to John Ike and Vera Steele Smith.

He was a member of Elm Springs United Methodist Church and retired from the Springdale Post Office in 1986, where he had been a mail carrier. He served with the 1st Cavalry 99th Field Artillery in the Army during the Korean War. He was a 1947 graduate of Springdale High School. He was a farmer and raised black Angus cattle. He enjoyed gospel music and the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by grandson, Sam Craft.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Marie Smith of the home; his stepson, Roy David Edwards of Wellsburg, W.Va.; his stepdaughter, Teresa Dunham and husband Don of Palm Springs, Calif.; two stepgrandchildren, Dan and Marcus Craft.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Elm Springs United Methodist Church with the Revs. Carl Palmer and Wesley Pruitt officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Springs Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Funeral Home in Springdale, online at www.memfuneral.com.

ELM SPRINGS — Betty Marie Smith of Elm Springs died Sunday, May 22, 2011, at Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale. She was born Aug. 23, 1932, in Massard, Ark., to James Franklin Michael and Annie Laurie (Carmack) Michael.

She moved with her mother, sisters and brothers to California in early 1945. She attended Oxnard High School and Ventura Cornmunity College and became a psychiatric technician at Camarillo State Hospital, Camarillo, Calif.

Betty returned to Arkansas in 1976 to wed the love of her life, John Hugh Smith. They enjoyed traveling, family genealogy research, family get-togethers and attending Elm Springs United Methodist Church in Elm Springs with John's death in 2008.

Betty was also preceded in death by her mother in 2009; and by four brothers; two sisters; and beloved grandson, Sam Herbert Craft.

She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her son, Roy David Edwards of Wellsburg, W.Va.; her daughter, Teresa Lynn Dunham and her husband, Donald; grandchildren, Dan Edward Craft and Marcus Lee Craft, all of Palm Springs, Calif.; sister, Pauline Biesecker and her husband, Wayne, of Ventura, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family extends a special thank you to Betty's cousins, Juanita Clark and Mildred Stepp and to friend, Olen McCoy (now deceased), for the special care that they gave to Betty over the period of her extended illness.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 26, 2011, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 27, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Elm Springs United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Carl Palmer officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Springs Cemetery under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home.
