Richard James Smith, 77, of Magnolia, passed away on Monday, March 5, 2012, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, La. He was born on May 30, 1934, in El Dorado, to the late Lawrence Edward and Anna Frances (Oldeman) Smith. He was a graduate of Parkers Chapel High School in 1953. Richard served in the United States Navy and was the previous owner of Smith Business Machines with his wife, Ann. He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Magnolia, a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, and loved quail hunting, golf, and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Harriet Ann (Pickering) Smith; and a brother, Robert Smith. Richard is survived by his daughter, Teresa Pearce and her husband, Steve, of Bastrop, La.; two grandchildren, Melanie Goolsby and her husband, Drake, of Dallas, and Patrick Pearce and his wife, Kaci, of Monroe; two great-grandchildren, Stella Goolsby and Parker Pearce; three sisters, Helen Greany of Jacksonville, Patricia Wilson and her husband, Otis, and Julia Murray, all of El Dorado; a special friend, Avanell Story of Magnolia; and foster sister, Annette Gray and her husband, Herbert, of Dubach, La.; and numerous nephews, nieces, and a host of friends. Funeral will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Gregory Pilcher officiating, and under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home, Inc., of Magnolia. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in El Dorado. Visitation with the family was held from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Gideon's International or to the charity of the donor's choice. Active pallbearers will be his nephews, Tim Murray, Don Murray, Joe Murray, Roy Murray, Blake Murray, David Wilson, Mark Wilson, Tom Wilson, David Smith and Paul Smith.
