Joanna Smith 74 of El Dorado, AR, died on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born on February 3, 1935 in Kennett, Missouri; Bessie Joanna Smith was the daughter of Henry and Ada Bradford Slankard. A devoted mother and grandmother, Joanna was a member of Southside Baptist Church. Growing up in the Blytheville and Piggott area, Joanna sang every Sunday on the radio in a gospel trio with her sisters and later two friends. Joanna enjoyed decorating her home with her collection of porcelain dolls and music boxes. She also loved flowers and worked as a florist for Carolyn Hobbs Florist, Spooner House of Candles, and Carousel Florist, and later at Union Medical Center in central supply. Joanna was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors are her husband David B. Smith, sons W. David Smith and wife Reha, Danny J. Smith and wife Sherian, Kenneth W. Smith and wife Gayle all of El Dorado, a brother Bill Slankard of Flint, MI, sisters Bonita Howard of Sun City West, AZ, Betty Hundley of Springfield, MO, Orla Jo Shock of Flint, MI, and 8 grandchildren and 15 great -grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, October 10, 2009 in the Chapel of Bailey Funeral Home with Rev. Russell Pedigo and Rev. Terrell Harrison officiating. Joanna's grandsons Kevin Smith, Kris Smith, Justin Collins, Josh Collins, Jacob Smith, and Tracy Mills will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from5 p.m. to 7p.m. Because of Joanna's love for her poodles memorials may be made to UCAPS, 1000 Sunset Road, El Dorado, AR 71730 or The Arthritis Foundation, P.O. Box 96280, Washington, D.C. 20077.
