*Obituary
David Paul Smith, 78, of El Dorado went home to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at the John R. Williamson Hospice House. He was born January 17, 1934, to Lonnie Charles and Diamon Lillie Burnside Smith in Strong, Arkansas.
Many people live their lives seeking to find comfort and entertainment for themselves but Paul was one of those rare individuals who lived life seeking to make others lives richer. He loved serving as a volunteer weekly at Salvation Army and treasured his Thursday visits to various nursing homes, giving a smile and lending a listening ear to the memories and life stories of many friends. He willingly took on any 'fix-it' projects that would come up around the church he attended.
Paul had a life-long love for the Arkansas Razorbacks. He instilled this passion in his children, whom he often loaded up in his car, all decorated with Razorbacks, and made the trip to Little Rock to cheer on those Hogs!! His love for the Razorbacks has continued in the hearts of his grandchildren who would often make the trip back to El Dorado to enjoy a family-fun 'Razorback watch-party' with their Mom and Pop.
Paul was retired from Lion Oil, where he worked as a plant operator for nearly 40 years and was a member of Dumas Memorial United Methodist Church. With a heart for service and his country, Paul served in the United States Air Force from 1953-1961.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Eva Vestal; and brother, Charles Smith.
Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Alice Janice Smith; one son, Keith Smith (Teresa) of El Dorado, and their daughter Cherie Carpenter (Jeremy) of Lowell, Arkansas; two daughters, Paula Yocum (Scott) of El Dorado and their daughters Lauren White (Austin) of Alexander, Arkansas, Melissa Yocum of Little Rock, Arkansas; Pam Blake (Earl) of El Dorado and their children Clint Blake (Carlen) also of El Dorado, and Rachel Blake of Conway, Arkansas. Paul is also survived by one brother, Billy Smith (Agnes) of El Dorado and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. Paul was an extremely devoted family man that loved his wife and children and felt exceptionally blessed to have 5 wonderful grandchildren who lovingly called him 'Pop'.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, December 14, 2012, at Young's.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Young's Chapel with Rev. Sylvia Nosic and Rev. Gil Sills officiating. Burial will follow with military honors at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Young's Funeral Directors.
Memorials may be made to the John R. Williamson Hospice House, 2301 Champagnolle Road, El Dorado, Arkansas 71730; Champagnolle Landing Gym, 910 E. 4th, El Dorado, AR 71730; or to the Salvation Army, 419 South Madison, El Dorado, Arkansas 71730.
