MELBOURNE – Elmer Garland “Doker” Gillihan, 82, of Melbourne, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at a nursing home in Melbourne.

Born Aug. 8, 1918, in Lunenburg, he was the son of Ben and Mae Denton Gillihan.

He was a civil service worker for 27 years. He was in the Army and served in World War II. He received a purple heart and three Bronze Stars.

He was of the Baptist faith and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Villa Gillihan; four sons, Donnie Gillihan of Melbourne, Carl Gillihan, Larry Gillihan and Randy Gillihan, all of Escalon, Calif.; a daughter, Cathy Langston of Melbourne; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Flavil and Frank Gillihan; and two sisters, Velda and Selma Gillihan.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Billy Howard Memorial Chapel in Melbourne with Noble Wiles officiating. Burial will be at Reeves Cemetery near Guion with arrangements by Eddie’s Family Funeral Home in Melbourne.

Pallbearers are Rex Tate, Jim Haley, Lee Watson, Eudell Smith, Don Watson and Alvin Jeffery.

Honorary pallbearers are Vance Tate and Newt Blankenship.
