Dr. Robert Johnson
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Dr. Robert Lee "Bob" Johnson, 86, of Nashville, died Jan. 9, 2006, at Meadows Living Center in Nashville. He was born June 21, 1919, in Detroit to Delbert M. and Loretta Walker Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Sowell Johnson. He received a Ph.D. in philosophy of religion from New York University. He chaired the department of theology and taught at John Brown University for nine years, retiring in 1984. He served as minister in Churches of Christ in Oklahoma, Detroit, Long Island, N.Y., Abilene, Texas, and at Eastgate Church of Christ in Siloam Springs. He was the author of two books, "Humanism and Beyond" and "A Commentary on the Book of Galatians." He served as a captain during World War II, stationed at Molesworth AFB, England. He was a member of the 303rd Bomb Group Association, presiding at the annual reunions for more than eight years. He was a member of Eastgate Church of Christ and was involved in the Rock Club of Benton County, the Farmer's Co-op and the Dogwood Literacy Council.

Survivors include one son, Thom Johnson and wife Nancy of Enid, Okla.; one daughter, Mary Hemminger and husband Bob of Nashville; one sister, Iris Hurst of Fast Petersburg, Pa.; six grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fastgate Church of Christ with Charles Cash officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Wasson Funeral Home in Siloam Springs, online at www.wassonfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Christian Scholars Conference to fund minority scholarships for individuals seeking to attend the conference. Mail checks in Robert Johnson's name to David Fleer, Christian Scholars Conference, 800 W. Avon Road, Rochester Hills, Mich., 48307.
