PEA RIDGE — Chester Ray Johnson was born on Sept. 9, 1927, in Pea Ridge, Ark.

He was married for 67 years to his late wife, Polly (Shermier) Johnson.

He is survived by his daughter, Janetta (Johnson) Penn, Beverly Johnson and Ron Johnson, four grandchildren; Lindsay (Penn) Mack, Cole Johnson, Sabrina Johnson, Macy Johnson and one great grandson Micah Mack, son-in-Law, Michael Penn and brother Bob Johnson.

Chester spent most of his childhood in Pea Ridge and Rogers, which is where he met his wife Polly. Chester's first job was at a gas station as a mechanic and then he was hired by Boeing Airlines. He was very successful in his career working his way up to the position of Director of Operations over the B747.

He retired from Boeing after 25 years and was hired by Rockwell International to be the General Manager over the B1 Bomber and Space Shuttle projects. He was considered by many the Lee Iacocca of his industry. After 5 years with Rockwell he "retired" soon after the last B1 rolled out of its hangar.

He consulted for several years during said "retirement" and served as the CEO of Vogue Motor Homes for over a year. He also became a Mason and a Shriner contributing his time and knowledge as their treasurer. He was later to be given the prestigious title as Honorary Shriner.

As a result of having moved around extensively, he and Polly had traveling in their blood. They started with tents, moved to campers and upgraded RVs until they made it to the top with a 40-foot long Prevost.

They didn't limit their travels to just the states. They traveled the world; Alaska, Norway, the Mediterranean, London, Paris, and parts of Russia and Germany were all a part of their journeys. In between their travels they would alternate between their home in Bella Vista and Palm Springs.

After a very fulfilling retirement they decided to move from Bella Vista Arkansas to Houston to be close to their daughters. Chester treasured his time seeing his grandchildren and great-grand child.

Chester became ill with dementia the last four years. He survived insurmountable setbacks. The doctors never ceased to be amazed at his tenacity and strength to live. Chester finally succumbed to a variety of complications just one day after what would have been his 67th wedding anniversary.

Chester was known for his brilliance, approach-ability, dedication, leadership, caring heart, sensitive spirit, and devotion to his family and God. The good Lord has blessed Chester and Polly to once again be together in heaven.

Pola Dean (Polly) (Shermer) Johnson was born October 16, 1926 in Magazine, Arkansas. She is survived by her husband, Chester Johnson, daughter Janetta Penn, daughter Beverly Johnson, son Ron Johnson, four grandchildren Lindsay Mack, Cole Johnson, Sabrina Johnson, Macy Johnson, one great-grandchild Micah Mack, a sister Delores Fletcher and brother Raymond Shermer.

Polly’s younger years were in Magazine, Arkansas, Elk City, Oklahoma and then on to Rogers, Arkansas, where she met Chester at the age of 21. They were married on April 10, 1948. They moved several times throughout her husband’s career, anywhere from Louisiana, Kansas, Nebraska, back to Kansas, Washington, back again to Kansas, Philadelphia, and finally to California where he retired. Polly and Chester returned to their home town where they lived for several years.

As Polly never let any grass grow under her feet, traveling was in her blood. They joined a RV rally group, a very adventurous group I might say so myself. They spent more time in their RV than they did at their place of residence while going anywhere to Alaska, to all over the United States.

They then decided to move to Houston, Texas where their two daughters were and where she spent the rest of her life.

Polly was like a little bullet, full of spit fire, feisty, oodles of personality. She was an avid reader and the TV was always on a news channel. There was never a topic to be discussed that she wasn’t abreast on. As she loved clothes and her high heel sandals, she made Chester take her all around to shop. Just to give them something to do, she would just drum up an excuse to get out, even if to just return something.

Due to Chester’s illness, they left Kingwood and moved to The Forum skilled nursing facility and Polly was able to be in independent living. Her apartment had a gorgeous view that she loved to look out her window.

And that is where she died at approximately 2:00am on February 15, 2015. She did it her way. She wanted to die in that apartment, not in a hospital or skilled nursing, and she wanted to just die in her sleep. The good Lord blessed her with her wishes and now she is in Heaven.

No services are scheduled at this time.
