BELLA VISTA — Dr. Mary Margaret Roberts, 87, of Bella Vista, Ark., died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center, Rogers, Ark. She was born March 30, 1923, in Independence, Iowa, to Thomas R. Roberts and Bertha B. Beal Roberts.
Mary graduated in 1940 from Decorah High School, Decorah, Iowa; and graduated "summa cum laude" from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, in 1944. Later, she received her master's degree from Northwestern University, Chicago, and a Ph.D. at Louisiana State University. She was a member of the American Association of University of Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, National Communication Association and Central States Communication Association, of which she was president in 1983-1984. She was a board member of Benton Co. Single Parents Scholarship Program and editor of The Speech Teacher in 1573-1975. She was recently elected to the Kansas Speech Communication Hall of Fame. She previously received several awards from the National Communication Association and Central States Communication Association.
She was preceded in death by her parents: one brother one sister; and one nephew.
She is survived by her sister, Lucile M. Roberts, Col. Ret'd of Bella Vista; and one nephew, James D. Peacock of Laurel, Md. She is also survived by numerous former speech communications students.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church of Bella Vista.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory, 2258 Forest Hills Blvd., Bella Vista, Ark.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Benton Co. Single Parents Scholarship Program or Col. Lucile M. Roberts and Dr. Mary M. Roberts Scholarship in Nursing at Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kan., or the First United Methodist Church of Bella Vista.
