LaVern White Smith, age 85, died Thursday, November 19, 2009 at the Hospice of the Ozarks in Mt. Home, AR.

LaVern was born a twin on Dec 29, 1923 to Henry Wilson and Mildred Powell White in Cotter, AR.

She had four siblings all now deceased: Edith White, Henry Lee White, Abner Powell White, and her twin, Fern White Morris.

Growing up the family operated White's Cash Store located next to the home place at the "top of the hill" in Cotter. LaVern and her siblings all participated in delivering milk, eggs, groceries, and newspapers during their youth.
LaVern and Fern graduated from Cotter High School in 1943. After graduation the twins joined their father in Kansas City to work at North American Aviation, a manufacturer of B-25's for the war effort. After World War II they all moved back to Cotter. LaVern took a job at Arkansas Power and Light. After eleven years in that office she met and married Arvil C. Smith. His work took them to Texas and Louisiana but in a few years they found the opportunity to move back to El Dorado in her home state. They made their home there for 30 years. In El Dorado she was a long time employee of Elliott's jewelry store, and an active member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

After retirement LaVern and A.C. moved back to Cotter where she renewed old friendships but gave most of her time to enjoying the company of her family.

She is survived by niece, Teresa Morris Anderson, and nephew, Bill Morris, of Cotter, who are the children of her twin. In addition she leaves behind sister-in-law, Gladys White, of Gassville, AR; niece Beverly White Ring, of Olathe, KS, and nephews Ron White of Appison, TN, Don White of Russellville, AR, and Lloyd Lee Smith of Franklinton, LA. She had 9 grand nephews and nieces, and 8 great grands. Seven of those are boys.

Burial was in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Cotter, AR.
