Duard
November 4, 1926 - March 18, 2005

Duard Smith had a difficult English name to pronounce, so family, friends and business associates just called him “Tiny.” He may have been tiny in height, but he was large in stature. He partnered with his brother-in-law to create a Berrien County roofing business “King and Smith Roofing” that served the community under their leadership for two decades.
Duard Smith dreamed of being a doctor or a lawyer in his youth, but an 8th grade education doesn’t garner scholarships. He was born of sharecropper parents in Alabama, but had big dreams. This self-made man is one of a dying breed of entrepreneurs that rise up from modest beginnings to start successful businesses out of their garages. In his youth Smith moved to Michigan for job opportunities. He was hired as an apprentice for a construction company to help build an education building at Western Michigan University that his daughter would someday attend. He worked numerous jobs including weekend gigs with a band to support his dream. He was a self-taught accomplished musician who could play numerous instruments, but couldn’t read a note of music.
When he had a spare moment he was either playing baseball or watching it on television. He followed his beloved White Sox throughout his life. Smith was also an avid sportsman who loved to fish and hunt. In his business practice, Smith often hired individuals who had lost their jobs and needed a hand-up. However, he was a man of business integrity and participated in training each employee from his strict standards of excellence. No job was finished until he inspected it, because he gave a money back guarantee that is rare in business today. After retiring he moved to Gassville, Arkansas where he also owned a local grocery business, and automobile body shop. Duard had a life partner in his dream; his lovely wife Lois. Duard Smith and Lois Lindsey married December 15, 1949 by a Justice of the Peace in Pocahontas, Arkansas while visiting family. He pledged to marry her upon first meeting. They were married for 47 years, had two children, Dwight L. Smith and Marti J. Smith. Lois passed away April 12, 1995 in their Mountain Home, Arkansas retirement residence from a long-term bout with pancreatic cancer. Duard Smith passed away on March 18, 2005. He most recently lived with his son Dwight and wife Linda in Cary, Illinois as he battled Alzheimer’s Disease and cancer.
Smith was a 33rd degree Mason and Shriner, and belonged to the Masonic Lodges in Michigan, Arkansas and Illinois. He is survived by his daughter, Marti Smith of Denver, Colorado and partner, Mag Strittmatter, son Dwight Smith, daughter-in-law Linda Smith and grandson, Devin Smith of Algonquin, Illinois, grandson Jordan Smith and his wife Elaine Smith of Chicago, Illinois, sister Marcie McReynolds of Bucyrus, Kansas, Edna King of Benton Harbor, Michigan, brothers Ed Smith of Watervliet, Michigan, Lavern Smith of Highland, California and the extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on March 24, 2005 at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Cotter, Arkansas. Internment will be at Kirby’s Tucker Memorial Cemetery in Gassville. Memorials made be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.
