On Tuesday of last week Mr. Oliver Smith who was shot near Buffalo on the 19 of last July by Joe Martin, died in a hospital at Newport. At the time he was shot it was thought he could live but a few hours, but a killed surgeon dressed his wounds and he rallied and it seemed he had a chance for recovery, but for the fact he was partially paralyzed. A few days ago he was taken to a hospital in Newport where we understand the Xray revealed two shots resting on his brain. To remove them meant death, therefore an opeation was deferred. Thursday morning one of his brothers who had been with him, left for his home at Buffalo, thinking that his brother was getting along very nicely, but when he arrived at Buffalo he was handed a telegram stating his brother was dead. The body was shipped to his home and Sunday it was buried in the Burnes graveyard in Baxter Co.

Note: The stone appears to state the death date as Sep 10, but the obituary says he died on Tuesday of last week, which would have been Sep 7.
