CLARK, Jane Mason DICKSON - In the death of Aunt Jane Clark, which occurred last Sunday, Bentonville and Benton county loses another one of the pioneer settlers who helped to blaze the way for civilization in this country. These sturdy pioneers, most of whom were from Tennessee, are fast disappearing and soon the last one will have been "gathered unto the fathers," but "their works will live after them," for no better class of citizens ever existed than those who settled here in an early day and by their frugality and industry caused a wilderness to "blossom as a rose". Aunt Jane Clark had lived here continuously for seventy-five years, which was no doubt a longer period of time than anyone else has resided here. The nearest approach to this long residence here, so far as we are aware, is that of Mrs. W.A. Harston (nee Dickson), who lacks but little of reaching that record, and we doubt if there are any in the county who can point to a longer residence than Aunt Jane Clark and Mrs. W.A. Harston.

Mrs. Jane Mason Clark (nee Dickson) was born in Bedford county, Tenn. March 31, 1827 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe Peel, in Bentonville March 13, 1910 at 7 a.m., age eighty-two years, eleven months and twelve days. She came to Benton county, Ark. in 1834. Her father, Major John B. Dickson, was one of the first settlers of the county, holding several prominent offices in the county. She was married to James W. Clark in 1844. To them were born nine children of whom six are still living, five boys and one girl. All of these were by her bedside at the time of her death except one. She had been in feeble health for years and when the end came she peacefully fell on sleep. She outlived all of her girlhood friends. At the time of her death she was the oldest resident of Bentonville. She came here when this beautiful little city was only an open wood and field. She lived to see it one of the loveliest little cities in all the land. From her girlhood she had a lively interest in her people and kept always in touch with their progress with delight. She was converted and joined the Methodist church in girlhood. She was a charter member of this church, to which she held with unabating loyalty for all these years. Although in the last year of her life she was unable to attend upon its services, yet no sacrifice was too great for her to make for its success. She was a true woman in every relationship of life - a devoted companion, a loving mother, a kind and generous neighbor, and best of all, a true christian. She lived well and died in full view of Heaven. She left her footprints on the sands of time. She was truly a benefactress of the community. We'll miss her from our midst. The sorrowing ones have the sympathy and prayers of a multitude of friends. The funeral was conducted at the M.E. Church, South by the writer, assisted by Revs. H. Hanesworth and J.W. Ellis. Many relatives and friends attended the service and we then followed her remains to the City Cemetery where we tenderly laid her body to rest. R.E.L. Bearden.
