It is with sorrow we chronicle the death of Charles W. Rice, one of our highly esteemed old settlers of Benton county, the sad event occurring at his home on Pea Ridge Thursday September 15th, 1892 after a short illness. The deceased was born in Roane county, Tennessee April 13th, 1813 and came to this county in 1859 where he has resided ever since. He was a Royal Arch Mason and had been a member of the M.E. church, South over 60 years. He was well known and highly respected and there are many sorrowing friends who with a devoted wife and loving children mourn his loss. RICE, Julia - (from The Rogers Daily Post) The death of Mrs. Julia Rice, which occurred at her home on Pea Ridge yesterday, removed from the walks of life one of the best known and most highly respected residents of that section of country. Her husband preceded her to the grave several years ago. The Rice family moved to the Pea Ridge country previous to the civil war from McMinn county, Tenn. and located on what is known today as the old homestead of that family. There this good old woman has resided for over fifty years, rearing nine sons and one daughter, all of whom are living and are among Benton county's most prominent citizens and would answer to the roll call as follows: Mrs. Dr. R. Mitchell, M.B. Rice, J.A. Rice, W.D. Rice, Dr. T.M. Rice, T.S. Rice, C.M. Rice, Dr. R.S. Rice, Dr. C.A. Rice and R.M. Rice. Funeral services were conducted by Revs. Gilmore, Lige Buttram and I.T. Rice at Buttram's chapel, all the children being present except J.A. and W.D. Rice, who on account of sickness could not be there. The remains were laid to rest beside her companion who was called from this life Sept. 16, 1892. Mrs. Rice became a member of the M.E. church, South at the time of the division of the Methodist church and has been a consistent member of 68 years. Her age was 84 years.
