FUNERAL OF MRS. TIM RICE AT BUTTRAM’S CHAPEL

Funeral services for Mrs. Nancy Buttram Rice, aged 72, wife of Timothy Rice, widely known resident of Northeast Benton County, who died at the Rice home on Highway 62 and the Old Leetown Road, nine miles north of Rogers and a mile from historic Elkhorn Tavern, at 11:20 o’clock Thursday morning, Feb. 13th, 1936, were held at Buttram’s Chapel at 2:30 o’clock Friday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. J.L. Shelby, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, at Pea Ridge, and the Rev. Conner Moorehead, pastor of the Central Methodist Church at Rogers. Interment was in the chapel cemetery with her four sons, Walter, Harry, Dot and Radius Rice, her son in law, R.C. Hill of Rogers and one of her nephews serving as pallbearers. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Callison Funeral Service.

Mrs. Rice’s death followed a stroke of apoplexy suffered at 5:30 o’clock Monday afternoon, Feb. 10th. During her brief critical illness her husband also was critically sick with pneumonia. Their elder daughter, Miss Katheryn Rice, died on Jan. 15th, this year.

Mrs. Rice was born and reared in Benton County. She was a member of a pioneer Northwest Arkansas family, as is her husband. Both the Rice and Buttram families came to Arkansas from Tennessee many yeas before the War Between the States.

Buttram’s Chapel, where her funeral rites were held, is named after her family, the land occupied by the chapel and cemetery having been contributed to community use by one of her pioneer ancestors.

Beside her husband, Mrs. Rice is survived by four sons and one daughter. They are Walter Rice of Springfield, Mo.; Harry Rice of Norton, Kansas; Dot Rice of Flagler, Colo.; Radius Rice of Garfield, Ark.; and Mrs. R.C. Hill of Rogers. She also is surivived by one brother, John Buttram of Bestwater, this county; and a sister, Mrs. Frank Pound of Texline, Texas. Mrs. Pound was called to the Rice home by her sister’s illness and she and the brother, and the children, were with Mrs. Rice when the end came.
