PATTERSON, Horace H. - Died at the residence of his son on Pea Ridge, Ark., Dr. H.H. Patterson, in the 82nd year of his age. The deceased was born in Wilson County, Tenn. Feb. 3rd, 1819, in which county he received his education and grew up to manhood. In 1843 he was married to Ellen Jorman of the same County and State. To them were born seven children, two sons and five daughters, one son and two daughters now living. In the fall of 1852 he came with his family to Pea Ridge, Ark. and settled on the place where he has lived all of these years. December 1857 his wife died and in 1859 he was married to Sarah Jane Webb of Pea Ridge. To them were born five children, three sons and two daughters, all of whom are living. In 1843 he professed faith in Christ as his personal Saviour and united with the Missionary Baptist Church, in which church relationship he remained until his death. His first membership after his arrival in this country was with the old Sugar Creek Church, whose place of worship was near and south of Elk Horn Tavern on Pea Ridge. Some years after this, he with others constituted the charter members of the old Twelve Corner Church, which has so long stood and which still stands as a blessing to the community. In 1873 he placed his membership with the Pea Ridge Church, which was organized that year, and in this church he lived and labored until his death. From the time of his arrival on Pea Ridge until his physical condition could no longer admit of it, he was actively and successfully engaged in the practice of medicine. Not many homes on Pea Ridge that have not at some time in the years gone by been made grateful to Uncle Patterson for his faithful assistance in times of affliction. He was elected by the voters of Benton County as a delegate to the State Convention which framed the present Constitution of the State of Arkansas. Of this honor conferred upon him by the people of Benton County he always spoke in grateful remembrance. Realizing that the end was near he called around him those of his beloved children that could be present and tenderly and touchingly told them of his great love for them and the deep anxiety he felt for their salvation. He had written instructions as to the epitaph to be placed upon his tombstone, adding, "I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." A great company of his brethren, neighbors and kindred followed his remains to the family burying place on the old homestead, where the writer, assisted by Bro. W.D. Joyner, conducted the funeral service and all that was mortal of this grand old man was committed to the dust, but upon the hearts and the minds of all who truly knew him will be left lasting impressions, and our remembrance of him will ever be that of "a good and a just man." P. Carnahan.
