Velma Lee Harris, 70 of the Jordan community near Norfork died Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Calico Rock Medical Center. The wife of Leaman Harris, she was a longtime resident of this area and a member of the Missionary Baptist Church of Crossroads, in Izard County.

Bro. Price Lovelace of Pineville conducted Mrs. Harris’s funeral Nov. 17 at the Oxford Cemetery. The Howard Funeral Home of Calico Rock was in charge of arrangements.

Born Jan. 11, 1910 at Tupelo, Miss., Mrs. Harris moved to Arkansas as a child with her parents, the late John Edward Cantrell and Latisha Dulaney Cantrell. She and Mr. Harris were married Jan 14, 1928 in Izard County, and farmed there for a number of years before moving to Jordan.

Survivors include her husband of Jordan; two sons, Cleo of Harrison and Carles of Cotter; three daughters, Bernadine Mays of Pine Bluff, Verna Lee Grice of Melbourne and Susan Jenkins of Fulton, Mo.; two brothers, Gordan Cantrell of Melbourne and Neely Cantrell of Memphis, Tenn.; three sisters, Thelma Keeney of Larkin, Kans.; Almar Stevens of Melbourne and Annie Bell Thompson of Jonesboro; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers for the graveside service were Mike Mays, Phil Mays, Bobby Harris, Jimmy Thompson, Sonny Stevens and Bruce Harris. Honorary pallbearers were Denny Copeland, Terry Small, Alton Rush, Charles Harris and Donald Ray Cantrell.
