Arthur Harris, aged 53, took his own life here Tuesday morning about 9 o'clock by shooting himself through the head with a 22-caliver automatic rifle. Sid Hightower found Harris in a dying condition on the north side of the creek about 100 yards below the highway bridge. Harris lived with his family about two mile southeast of town. He died at the home of his mother, in the east part of town, about two hours later. He never regained consciousness.
Mr. Harris had been in bad health for some five years, and was unable to work much of this time. He was one of the county's best citizens and has held several positions of honor. He was for a number of year constable of this township, has served as marshal of Calico Rock and also of Mt. View. He has served the county as deputy sheriff and also connected with tick eradication work here.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Grady, Roddy and J.T. Harris; three daughters, Mrs. Homer Wood, Mrs. Carl Campbell and Billie Jean; two brothers Dr. C.L. Harris and Sheriff J.A. Harris all of Melbourne.
Burial was at the Melbourne Cemetery, Wednesday afternoon.
