White River Currant, Calico Rock, Arkansas, January 18, 1979:
Austin D. Harris, age 74 years, died suddenly Tuesday, January 9, 1979. He was a retired grocery man and business leader in the Calico Rock community for many years. He was a past president of the Calico Rock Lions Club and served on its rodeo committee for more than 25 years. He was an active leader in all civic affairs of the town and community, an active member of the Spring Creek United Methodist Church, Acacia Lodge #625, which he had served as Worshipful Master and all lesser offices and served as secretary for many years. Also he was a past Patron of Guiding Star Chapter #588 Order of Eastern Star and the present Associate Patron.
Politically he was a Democrat and very active in politics. He served as Alderman on the City Council of Calico rock for several terms and also served as Mayor of the city. Mr. Harris was plain spoken on his conviction and stood for progressive programs which he believed to be for the best interest f the town and community. Due to failing health he retired from the grocery business in Calico Rock a few years ago, but he continued working for a better community.
He will be missed by the community, county and state.
