Died, June 12, 1920 at his home 4 miles northwest of Rogers, Joseph Newton Woods, aged 68 years, three months and 28 days. The deceased, the son of S. P. and Eliza G. Woods, was born Feb. 20, 1852 on the place entered by his grandfather in 1832. This was his life-long home. He was married to Miss Nancy M. Chambers in 1872 and to this happy union were born nine children, five sons and four daughters. He professed faith in Christ as his personal Savior over forty years ago and as his pastor for many years I can say that he was an acceptable member of the Presbyterian church. He is survived by his faithful and devoted companion and nine loving children: Dr. W. H. Woods of Jasper, Mo.; Dr. James P. Woods of Monett, Missouri; Alex, Allie and Bryce Woods of Rogers; Mrs. Nellie Barnes of Big Springs, Texas; Mrs. Grace Christy of Durango, Colo.; Mrs. Madge Gartside and Miss Blanch Woods of Rogers; a sister, Mrs. Jackson Maxwell of New Mexico and twenty grandchildren. The funeral service, held by the writer, was attended by a large congregation of sympathizing friends and neighbors. The remains were laid to rest in the Oakley Chapel cemetery, there to await the command of Him who "is the resurrrection and the life." May the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, comfort his bereft ones and all sorrowing hearts. P. Carnahan --- To the above words of commendation from Mr. Woods' aged friend and pastor, we desire to add our personal tribute. The editor had known the deceased for nearly a quarter of a century and had ever found him a steadfast friend in every movement that had for its purpose the upbuilding and betterment of the neighborhood, country and state. At a time when all too few farmers were taking an interest in the advanced work of the U. of A. and the State Horticultural Society, Mr. Woods could be depended upon not only to attend but to help in spreading the influence of these meetings. He was at all times and in all places a true hearted Southern gentleman; courteouss and kind; genial and generous in his hospitality and his intercourse with his fellowmen. By the death of Mr. Woods the editors of the Democrat have lost one of the staunchest friends they ever had and we mourn his departure as a personal loss and as a loss to the community.
