INJURIES FATAL TO SQUIRE LIGE AUSTIN

Oldest Justice of the Peace in Benton County Dies at His Farm Home Tuesday

Squire Lige Austin, prominent west county farmer, died about 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 1934, following injuries received the previous Saturday morning when he fell through an opening in the barn loft. He sustained a broken shoulder blade and four broken ribs. His spine was also injured, causing paralysis to set in from his waist. Owing to the account of his age, his death was not unexpected.

Funeral services and burial were held at the Bethel cemetery south of Gravette, this Thursday forenoon. The funeral was largely attended.

Mr. Austin was a native son of Benton county and was born on the old Austin homestead in the Cottage Grove community between Gravette and Decatur in 1858. His entire life had been spent there. Much of the land on the farm had been in cultivation for over 80 years.

Besides his widow he is survived by six children; John Austin of Gravette, Stroude Austin of Kansas City, Mrs. Hugh Fair, Mrs. Walter Mount, Mrs. Lanier Rogers of Gravette and Mrs. Waldron Hopkins of Sulphur Springs. Also by a brother, W.H. Austin of Gravette and a large number of other relatives.
