October 8, 1899 - December 15, 1968
Heard Gates Williams, 69, of 1001 Euclid Ave., a retired vice-president and trust officer of the National Bank of Commerce, died Sunday in a local hospital following a short illness. Mr. Williams retired in May, 1964, after 45 years with the bank, but continued as a member of the Board of Directors. His service with the National Bank of Commerce began in 1919 when he was employed as a clerk and bookkeeper. He became vice-president in 1959. Born Oct. 8, 1899, in Hillsboro, Ark., he was the son of Horatio Gates and Lena Heard Williams. He received his formal education in El Dorado schools and attended Ouachita College in Arkadelphia. In 1941, Mr. Williams served as president of the Junior Bankers Section of the Arkansas Bankers Association adn remained an active member of the ABA after becoming a senior officer of the bank. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of the First Baptist Church, a Shriner and member of Scimitar Temple and a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Lodge 13, F&AM. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Pearl House Williams; a son, Heard Gates Williams, Jr., Shreveport; a brother, Dr. Ralph C. Williams, El Dorado, and two grandsons. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Don Harbuck officiating. Interment will be in Arlington Cemetery under the direction of Young's. Active pallbearers will be Sam E. Babb, J. T. Bachtel, Harold Wood, Tommy Reeves, Dick Dumas, John T. Daniels, Clark Barton and Thornton Alexander. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. A. D. Cathey, the Theater Bible Class, Board of Deacons and choir of the First Baptist Church, and directors, officers, and all employees of the National Bank of Commerce.
