Claude I. Carter, 88, passed away at his Cantonment residence on Monday, April 30, 2007. Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Sylvia D. "Sweet Momma" Carter on March 8, 2007, step-son Richard D. Browne in August, 1961, his parents, George I. and Nan Carter, and brothers Acie, Harvey, Gordon, and Jimmy, and sister Carrie McGee all of Warren, Arkansas.
Mr. Carter was born in Warren, Arkansas on September 3, 1918. He grew up on a cotton farm and left home to join the United States Merchant Marines in 1937. He served on merchant ships in the Pacific and Mediterranean during and after World War II. In 1949 he met his future bride and they were married on July 21, 1950. In 1954 he and his family moved to Pensacola and in 1956, Mr. Carter founded Carter's Sheet Metal Works and remained its owner until he and his wife retired in 1982. They moved from Brownsville in 1981 to Cantonment where he and his wife became avid vegetable and flower gardeners. Mr. Carter and his wife were also great fishermen and for many years fished the rivers and sloughs of Northwest Florida and Southeastern Alabama. After retirement, their fishing was primarily in the pond they constructed in their back yard and the source of many hours of enjoyment.
Mr. Carter is survived by his son, George of Pekin, Illinois, his daughter Jennifer of Cantonment, grandchildren Jeremy Carter, Michelle Graff, Jason Weiner, Peter Carter, George Carter II, Kristen Blalack, Richard Carter, and Annette Accongio, and eight great-grandchildren; sisters Betty Woodward of Meridian, Mississippi, and Alice Jeffers of Warren, Arkansas, and brother Norman Carter also of Warren. He will be missed by his very special friends Marvin and Mary Lou Cohran, Marion and Elaine Johnson, and Hugh and Mary Cleveland.
Mr. Carter and his wife will be interned in the Ebenezer Cemetery, Warren, Arkansas. George and Jennifer wish to thank Covenant Hospice for the love and care they provided their father the last six months, especially Summer, Pam, and Linda. In lieu of flowers they request donations be made to Covenant Hospice; 5907 Berryhill Road; Milton, FL 32570.
The family will have a private service.
TRAHAN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 430 Beverly Parkway, Pensacola, FL. is in charge of arrangements.
