Leonard C. Smith better known as “Buckshot” was born May 12, 1929 in Buena Vista, Arkansas to the late Marshall and Nora Smith. Leonard was the oldest of five children. He was a faithful member Greater St. Paul Baptist Church, where he served on the Deacon Board and sung in the Male Chorus.
He was well known in the community of Ouachita County where he served on the Police force for over 65 years. Buckshot wore many hats. He was known for patrolling for Camden Fairview School District and served as a funeral escort for Reddick Funeral Home and Funeral Attendant at Williams Funeral Home in Camden, Arkansas. He also served on the committee for the Daffodil festival and the Tate’s Barn Sale. Buckshot was the chairman of the Camden Community Brotherhood and he received recognition from the Ministerial Alliance and corvette show. He received various accolades and awards but the greatest of all was him being recognized as the oldest Police officer in the state and the oldest Active officer in the country by the HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
The last memorable moments of Buckshot were him being showcased on the Kelly Clarkson Show. Interviews with Anderson Cooper from CNN, Coptales podcast with Sergeant Sean “Sticks” Larkin. He was also recognized on his 92nd Birthday with a parade by the city of Camden which was aired NBC news by Lester Holt.
In April of 1963 Leonard Smith married DeLois Green. To this union 3 children were born. He was united in marriage to Annie Todd in 2013.
On July 25th Buckshot transitioned from this life to his heavenly home. He was preceded his death his wife DeLois Green Smith, sons: Derek Green, Roger Demond Smith, and Adrian Charles Smith; sisters: Florene Malone and Marjie Jackson; brothers: Charles B. Smith and Hershall Lee Smith; and one grandson: Sergio Green.
He leaves to cherish his memories one daughter: Elaine Smith Thomas of Camden, AR; two sons: Gerald (Dollie) Green of Camden, AR; and Albert Charles Todd III of Conway, AR; grandchildren: Denver DeLois Thomas of Concord, North Carolina, Jordan Dakota Thomas (Adell) of Ruston, Louisiana, & Adrian Smith of Camden, Arkansas. One special friend Ora Broadnax. He began working at the police department in 1958, working for free. He started at the sheriff department in 1975 until 2010. He was asked come out of retirement in 2011. Buckshot worked until his health began to fail in 2023.
