She had been sick for only ten days or so and it was not thought until a short time before her death that the attack would prove serious. She was a member of the christian church and her funeral was under their charge. The funeral was held on Monday forenoon at 10 o'clock and services were conducted by Rev. R.H. Johnson of this city. The remains were laid to rest in the town cemetery. Mrs. Powell was born in Tennessee on Sept. 28, 1828 and died on May 17th, 1896 - being in her 68th year at the time of her death. She was married in 1850 to Joseph Powell who died here about two years ago. She came to Washington county in 1878 and therefore was classed among the early residents. She leaves no children. Mrs. Mary E. Powell, better known as "Aunt Lizzie," died Sunday morning about three o'clock after an illness of a few weeks. She was born September 28, 1828 and on October 3, 1860 was united in marriage to Joseph Powell. She was a sister of E.T. Caudle. At the age of 18 she united with the Christian church, remaining a faithful member until her death. The remains were interred in Bluff Cemetery Monday morning at ten o'clock, funeral services being conducted at the grave by Prof. R.H. Johnson. No couple were ever more highly esteemed than Uncle Joe and Aunt Lizzie, as they were called. Uncle Joe died some two years ago and his wife never fully recovered his loss. They are now reunited in the happy beyond where peace and joy reign supreme.
