The Springdale News
Friday, December 1, 1893

It is with feelings of genuine regret that we are called upon to chronicle this week the death of Uncle Joe Powell which occurred at his home in this city Saturday night at 10 minutes past 11 o'clock, the result of a severe cold which developed into pneumonia. He was sick some 3 or 4 weeks. Joseph Powell was born in Releford county, Tenn. June 4, 1834. He joined the Christian church in Sept. 1859 and remained a faithful member until his death. He was united in marriage to Mrs. M.E. McGaugh on the 4th day of Nov. 1860 in Releford county. No children came to bless their home but they lived a happy and contented life nevertheless. In December 1878 they came to Arkansas, locating near Son's Chapel and six years later they moved to Springdale where they have since lived. Mrs. Powell surviving her husband. If there ever was a good man Joseph Powell - was always known as Uncle Joe by his many friends - was one. He was quiet and unassuming in manner, content to fill the humble station in life which was designed for him. To know Uncle Joe was to admire and respect him. While being true to his principles and his convictions of right, he never sought to parade his views before his friends or the public but was for everyone to hold and entertain their own opinions. During and since the organization of the Christian church in Springdale Uncle Joe has been one of its best and most faithful members, doing at all times his utmost to advance its interests and the church has lost one of its best members, the community a good citizen and the wife a tender and loving husband. Uncle Joe's place will be hard to fill. The News extends sympathy to the bereaved widow. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Monday at 12 o'clock, being conducted by Rev. Lunsford of the Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. Maddox of the Methodist church and Eld. Hale of the Primitive Baptist church.
