Will P. Mayfield, a well known citizen of Pea Ridge died January 13, 1926 at his home two miles southwest of Elkhorn Tavern. He was born March 27, 1865 at Fayetteville, Ark. He was a son of "Uncle Nix" and Martha Mayfield and a grandson of "Uncle Charley" Rice. His father and grandfather were among the best of the pioneer settlers on Pea Ridge. He was married to Orena Woodyard December 29, 1887 and to this union was born one daughter, Bess, who departed this life March 21, 1912 at the age of 22 years. Mr. Mayfield was converted and joined the M.E. church South in 1912. He loved and was faithful to his church, having been steward in the church for many years. He had lived since early babyhood on the same farm except one year spent in Colorado for the benefit of his daughter's health. It was the writers good fortune to have known him long and well and we only knew him to esteem him more highly as the years went by. He was friendly and had friends. He leaves a wife, three brothers and one sister. His father-in-law, John P. Woodyard, a veteran of the Civil War, remains with Mrs. Mayfield. Funeral services were conducted at Buttram Chapel January 14th at two o'clock by his pastor, Rev. W.E. Bishop, and an immense crowd listened to the discourse which was primarily an admonition to the living, as the preacher had not known Brother Mayfield. J.H. Buttram followed the speaker with a few words of tribute to the memory of the deceased. He will be sadly missed from the home, the church and the community. A Friend.
