Benton County Democrat

MASON, John J. - (from Mason Valley) Uncle John J. Mason departed this life in the night of the 28th of Sept. last, being sick only a few hours. His disease was supposed to be neuralgia of the heart. His two sons that are here went to his relief as soon as they learned he was complaining. He seemed to rest well in the fore part of the night so they all lay down to rest. Not long afterwards Uncle John got up, staggered across the room to where his son Josh was lying and fell across the bed and died immediately. His funeral was preached at the Coffelt graveyard the following Sabbath by Rev. Mathews after which the body was laid in the tomb. Uncle John was a true christian, a kind husband and father. John J. Mason was born in Burk Co., North Carolina in the year 1809. While young his father moved to the state of Alabama and there died, after which the wife with her children moved back to the old homestead, raised her family. In Feb. 1857 Uncle John moved to Benton Co., Ark. which he has made his home ever since. He was married to Emily E. Gibbs in the year 1835 in North Carolina, has raised a family of six children, five of which are still living, married and have families, three of which are living in Benton county, one in Baxter Co., Ark. and one in Washington Territory. He professed religion about the year 1837 and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. All of his children are religious except one and may they all live so when they come to die they may meet their father in a world where all will be peace and joy. The aged widow and family have the sympathy of the entire community.
