Oval Alvis Baker, 85, of Elkins died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004. He was born Aug, 17, 1918, in Hazel Valley to David Alvis and Arvanah Armond Baker. He is a machinist for Ayers Furniture, a rancher for Rabeen Ranch, a retired pastor and a past member of the American Legion. He was a Navy veteran and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Oark, Ozone and Damascus in the 1930s. He was ordained into the ministry on July 6, 1954, was a member of Drakes Creek Regular Baptist Church and for the last seven years, he has attended Hazel Valley Community Church.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Verda Baker of Elkins and Charles and Jackie Baker of Elkins; one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn S. and Eugene Shepherd of Winslow; two brothers, Ted Baker of Eureka Springs, Kan., Waymon Baker of West Fork; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cleta A. Baker, who passed away on Sept. 17, 2001.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at Buckner Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Samuels and Jasper Hankins officiating. Burial will follow in Buckner Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Rick Shepherd, Destry Burnett, Randy Shepherd, Shane Shepherd, Robert Bayliss, Roy Laird, Steve Shepheid, John Baker and Joseph Baker.

He is through working on the building.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Nelson-Berna Funeral Home in Fayetteville.
