James Daniel Hawkins, 85, of St. Paul, died Thursday, August 31, in the Madison County Hospital.

He was born March 12, 1882 in Crawford County. Mr. Hawkins lived for many years on a farm at the head of Haskins Branch in the Ball Creek community. He was among the first and most successful farmers to seed his land to grass for the growing of livestock and the prevention of erosion. He moved to St. Paul when he could no longer carry on the work on the farm which is still known as the Hawkins place.

Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Sarah Jane Hawkins of the home; two sons, Alfred of Combs and Johnny of St. Paul; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Harriman and Mrs. May Cooper of St. Paul and Mrs. Grace Thomas of Combs; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren. One great-great-grandchild and three children are deceased.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 Saturday, September 2, at the Combs Baptist Church with burial in Riverside Cemetery at St. Paul under direction of Brashears Funeral Home. The services were conducted by Rev. Curtis Barham. Pallbearers were Jasper Harriman, Ray Hawkins, Bill Hawkins, J. D. Hawkins, Dwight Hawkins and Larry Hawkins, all grandsons of the deceased.
