Calico Rock Progress, Calico Rock, Arkansas, December 7, 1945:

Sheriff Lawrence Harber, who met death in performance of duty, was 43 years of age. He was born and reared in the vicinity of Calico Rock, being the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jas. H. Harber. He was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends. He was a most capable officer and his untimely death is mourned by all who knew him.

Sheriff Harber was serving his first elective term as sheriff and collector of Izard County. He was appointed to the office to fill the unexpired term of J. A. Rodman when that officer entered the army in March 1943. Mr. Harber was nominated and elected to the office without an opponent in the elections of 1944. Prior to the time he had served about four years as revenue collector for Izard County. In early life he taught in schools of the county. He was a partner in the Melbourne Chevrolet Company and had farming interests in this county.

He was a member of the Methodist church, the Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was keenly interested in civic affair and took an active interest in matters of public interest.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Melbourne Thursday at 2:00, by Dr. Harry King, Methodist minister of Batesville. Interment was at Roselawn cemetery at Calico Rock.

Mr. Harber is survived by his wife, one daughter, Miss Joana, of Melbourne, two brothers, R. C. and Clyde Harber of this place and four sisters, Mrs. Martha Savage of Houston, Texas and Mrs. Lesbia Langston of this place, Mrs. Mamie Heasley of Little Rock and Mrs. Audie Gillihan of Sunnyside, Wash.
