BELLA VISTA — Howard Charles Black, 87, of Bella Vista died April 3, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rogers. He was born Sept. 20, 1912, in Warsaw, Ind., to Charles H. and Estella H. Rabbitt Black. He grew up in northern Indiana and attended De Pauw University and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1937. He began work as a research chemist at Swift and Co. in Chicago, Ill., in 1937, where he held several positions, including division manager, group leader, director of research and general manager. He was author of numerous scientific articles and patents. During World War II, he did research on food and food components for the U.S. Quartermaster Corp. He was active in scientific societies. He enjoyed boating and was active in Chicago yachting organizations. He moved to Bella Vista in 1972, where he was a charter member of the Bella Vista Community Church and served on numerous boards and committees of the church. He was director of the Bella Vista property owners' association from 1974 to 1976 and served on several POA committees.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Black of Bella Vista, to whom he was married 62 years; one niece, Doris Matson of Plant City, Fla.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bella Vista Community Church with the Rev. Richard Lindman officiating. Arrangements are by Bella Vista Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bella Vista Community Church Foundation, 75 E. Lancashire Blvd., Bella Vista, 72714.
