EDWARDS, Cecil - Cecil Edwards of Southwest City accidentally shot himself with a rifle last last Friday afternoon and died a few hours afterwards in a Joplin hospital where he was rushed for medical attention. Just how the accident happened will never be known as no one was present when it occurred. For some time Cecil had been employed in the grocery and meat market of his brother-in-law, C.E. Queen, in Southwest City. On the day of his death he went to the slaughter pen to butcher a hog for the store, taking along a rifle to shoot the animal. A short time afterwards the delivery car was sent out to bring in the dressed hog. The driver found young Edwards, knife in his hand and the rifle near by. A mass of baling wire was tangled around his foot. The supposition is that when his foot became tangled in the wire he fell, discharging the rifle at the same time. The unconscious young man was hurried to Joplin where the hospital physicians stated that he was shot through the abdomen and that he could not recover. He died Saturday morning. The body was brought back to Southwest City where the funeral services were conducted by the Rev. John Scoggin of Decatur, pastor of the Baptist church. Burial was made later in the day at the Mt. Pleasant cemetery near Hiwasse when a short service was conducted at the grave. Cecil Edwards was born 17 years ago southeast of Gravette. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Edwards, a brother of W.R. Edwards, our county judge. He lived near Hiwasse for many years and was well known in that neighborhood. For some time he has been employed in the C.E. Queen store in Southwest City where his parents live. Besides his parents he is survived by one brother, Roy, of Southwest City and four sisters: Mrs. C.E. Queen, Mrs. Mabel Wetzell and Miss Gladys Edwards of Southwest City and a married sister. The distressing accident cast a gloom of sorrow over the place that had been his home and many words of sympathy have been extended to the bereaved ones.
