WOOD, Mary Ruth HARRIS - Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Harris Wood, aged 82 years, five months and 24 days, widow of the late Thompson H. Wood, and mother of Forrest A. Wood, former superintendent of Benton County schools, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bessie Pierce, at Pea Ridge, Ark. at 8 o'clock Tuesday morning, May 23rd, 1933 following a long illness, were held at the Pierce home at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. R.S. Hayden, pastor of Bentonville M.E. Church, South with interment in the Pea Ridge cemetery. Mary Ruth Harris was born at the old family homestead about one mile north of the town of Pea Ridge, Ark. on November 29th, 1850 and lived her entire life on Pea Ridge with the exception of four years in Louisiana soon after her marriage and six years here in Bentonville with her son, F.A. Wood and wife. On June 14th, 1874 she was married near Pea Ridge to Thompson H. Wood, a native of Bedford County, Tenn., who as a Confederate soldier had served as a member of the escort of Gen. N.B. Forrest and had lost a leg in the battle at Selma, Alabama near the close of the War Between the States. After their marriage he taught school here in Arkansas and also in Louisiana where they lived for four years. After their return to this state he was three times elected treasurer of Benton County. He died on June 20th, 1889 and was buried at Pea Ridge. Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Wood, F.A. Wood and Mrs. Bessie Pierce, both of whom survive their mother. She also is survived by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and by one brother and one sister, M.T. Harris and Mrs. J.W. Hileman, both of near Pea Ridge, who are now the only survivors of a family of 12 children. She is survived also by other relatives including a niece, Mrs. George Henry, who lives here in Bentonville. Mrs. Wood had been an invalid for six years and had been confined to her bed most of the time the past six months. Seventy-three years of her long life had been spent in the Pea Ridge community and she had been a member of the Pea Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church, South, since its organization a great many years ago as the successor to the Hileman Chapel.

Mrs. Mary R. Wood, a native born resident of Benton County and member of two pioneer families, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bessie Pierce, in Pea Ridge between 8 and 9 o'clock on Wednesday morning, May 24, 1933. She was past 82 years of age. Mrs. Wood had been afflicted with an incurable disease for the past six years and had undergone several operations for relief. For a year or more it has been known that she could not recover. A few months ago she had a sinking spell but rallied for the time being. Taken much worse a few days ago she succumbed yesterday. Funeral services were held at the home of her daughter in Pea Ridge this afternoon, the Rev. Bates Sturdy, pastor of the Pea Ridge M.E. Church and Rev. R.S. Hayden, pastor of the M.E. Church, South of Bentonville, conducting the services. Burial was made in the Pea Ridge cemetery. Mrs. Wood was the daughter of Nicholas and Mary Arm Harris who were among the early settlers on Pea Ridge. She was born on the Harris homestead about a mile north of Pea Ridge. She is survived by a son, Forrest A. Wood, county examiner, and a daughter, Mrs. Bessie Pierce. Mrs. Wood was the widow of Thompson Wood, a former treasurer of Benton County. He served in the Confederate army during the Civil War.
