TAYLOR, Wm. J. - {from Walnut Hill} Wm. J. Taylor was born in Benton Co., Ark. May 15, 1855 and died February 27, 1914, being 59 years, 7 months and 12 days old. He was married to Miss Saphronia Cooper September 23, 1875 and to this union were born nine children, eight of whom with the wife survive him. They are Mrs. Hattie Glosscox, Jasper and Ephriam Taylor, Payden, Okla.; Mrs. Ida Wilson, Buffville, Kan.; Mrs. Minerva Ellis, Garfield; Miss Alpha and Geo. and John Taylor, Garfield. Bro. Taylor made a public profession of religion June 18, 1883, joined the Primitive Baptist church in July 1883; was ordained to the ministry Nov. 7, 1885. No man of his church has been more successful in the work than he was. Without a doubt he has baptized more people and conducted more funerals than any other man reared in Benton county. Having been convinced some ten months ago that he had cancer of the bowels and could never get well, he made complete arrangements for his funeral. He repeatedly said he did not want his body turned into the hands of sinful men. Therefore he selected deacons from the Primitive Baptist church in the different localities to be his pall bearers. When all talks were made and all songs were sung, 83 carriage loads of sorrowing people watched him carried to the Walnut Hill cemetery where the body was tenderly laid away to await the judgment. In the death of Eld. W.J. Taylor, Garfield has lost one of the noblest characters of the state; a man of every laudable enterprise in his neighborhood. He was a man who was a real success in the ministry, in stock raising and in the nursery business.
