TAYLOR, Egbert - News reached Gravette last Thursday from Blackwell, Okla. telling of the instant death of Egbert Taylor, one of Gravette's best known citizens, caused by falling from the roof of a smelter to the ground. The Blackwell Daily Tribune and Mr. Taylor's brother, John, state as follows: "As nearly as can be learned by men who were working in the vicinity of the place the accident happened, Mr. Taylor had ascended to the roof and started to hang up his coat when he slipped, lost his footing, falling to the ground - a distance of from 30 to 35 feet, breaking both arms and the neck." Mr. Taylor had gone to Blackwell from Galena, Kas. on Saturday before the accident and, we understand, had engaged work along with Jesse Keith, also of this place, to do carpenter work on a smelter. The sad news of Mr. Taylor's death came as a shock to his host of friends here, and Mrs. Taylor was prostrated with grief and came to Gravette, remaining with friends until after the funeral. The body arrived Sunday morning and was taken to the Wm. Frazer residence until the funeral at 1 o'clock, which was conducted by Rev. Thos. Martin at the Methodist church, a large congregation of people attending. Undertaker Dunn of Sulphur Springs directed the funeral. Interment was made in Bethel cemetery south of Gravette. Egbert Taylor was born near Lafayette, Ind. March 20, 1849 and was aged 67 years and one month, death occurring April 20, 1916. Mr. Taylor was twice married and leaves four grown sons by the first union, Marion, Will and Charles, of Lafayette, Ind. and Elmer of East St. Louis. He also leaves two brothers, John of Blackwell, Okla. and Alexander of Lafayette, Ind. The two first named sons were here for the funeral and the brother, John, came with the body from Blackwell. A number of years after the death of his first wife, Mr. Taylor married the companion, Ellen, who survives. As the Rev. Martin brought out in his sermon, Mr. Taylor was a good man. He was a member of the Methodist church and had for a number of years of his life been a preacher. He had resided here for several years, most of the time on his farm and did considerable carpenter work. The Blackwell smelter company, on whose building Mr. Taylor was working, did a generous and manly deed; having supplied a fine casket, all undertaking expenditures and all costs that incurred both at Blackwell and enroute to Gravette. To Mrs. Taylor, sons, brothers, the adopted boy, Oscar Peterson, and other relatives, the News Herald offers sincere sympathy in their grief and loss, and the community unites with us.
