Wife of Late H. K. Dean, 87, Bestwater Pioneer, Succumbs

Mrs. Mary Catherine Dean, wife of the late Hiram King Dean and mother of Policeman Walter C. Dean and A. A. Dean of Rogers, died of a heart attack at her home east of Bestwater early Tuesday morning.

Mrs. Dean, 87 years old, a native of Benton county, was reared in southwest Missouri. She and Mr. Dean moved to Arkansas soon after their marriage March 8, 1878, 66 years ago. They were pioneer settlers of the Bestwater community.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Walnut Hill chapel, south of Garfield, with the Rev. Jack Deason of Pleasant Hill and George Williams of Bentonville officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Hill cemetery, with the Burns funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Dean is survived by three sons, Walter C. and A, A. Dean of Rogers and O. K. Dean of the home; three daughters, Mrs. J. B. Moore of Avoca, Mrs. George Snoderly of Garfield and Mrs. S. F. Woodcock of Garfield; 17 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

Mrs. Dean's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Green McClelland, moved from from Tennessee to Arkansas in an ox cart 94 years ago. Her father, a Confederate soldier, was captured in the battle of Prairie Grove, Ark. He was wounded in battle and died.

Mrs. Dean died in a log cabin that had been her home for many years. A typical early-day structure, the log cabin was erected 110 years ago by her husband's grandfather.
