Lela Dillard Yancey of Oxford, daughter of the late Benjamin Carson and Addie Elizabeth Jacobs Simmons, was born September 1, 1909 in Oxford. She died on November 4, 2002 in Mountain Home. She was 93 years old.

During her working years, Lela did many things; she was a teacher, a nurse’s aid at Salem Nursing Home, she worked for many years in the Oxford School Cafeteria and she worked at the Oxford Café. She was a wife, mother grandmother and great grandmother.

Lela was united in marriage to Earl Dillard on December 25, 1928 until his passing in February 1964. On July 21, 1977, she was married to Shelby Yancey until his passing in 1993. She was a member of the Oxford Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, and one son-in-law, Millie Helm of Oxford and Jewell and Gene Story of West Plains, Missouri; one son Sam Dillard of Nashville, Tennessee; one sister, Hazel Goodwin of Salem; three daughters-in-law, Rachel, Sandy and Sharon Dillard; sixteen grandchildren, Ron Helm, Chrys Anderson, Kathy Reams, Debbie Bigler, Joe Story, Theran “Bo” Story, Jeanmarie Nielson, Leslie Sharp, Terry Dillard, Jennifer Calcote, Michael Norvold, Thomas Norvold, Danny Dallard, Candace Blevins, Gary Dillard and Dwayne Dillard; 34 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; one step grand daughter, Debbie Cope; 2 step great grandchildren and 1 step great great grandchild and a host of other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, two sons, James and Carroll Dillard; one step daughter, Wilma Kay Rains; one great granddaughter, Sydney Norvold and one son-in-law, Terrence Helm.

Interment was at Oxford Cemetery under the direction of Eddie’s Family Funeral Home.

[Note: She was buried beside her first husband with the surname of Dillard even though she had been a Yancey for the last 25 years of her life.]
