Hugh Allen Murphy, 94, of Huntsville died Jan 9, 1999, in Fayetteville. He was born Dec. 21, 1904 at Asher, Ark. to Allen Franklin and Rebecca Ellen Stewart Murphy.
He was the Madison County assessor from 1932-1936, when he became the Director of Public Welfare for the county. He then joined the United States Postal Service in Huntsville where he serve for 32 years and retired as a mail carrier. He was a resident of the Huntsville area for most of his life.
He was preceded on Dec. 1, 1986, by his wife, Dott M. Swope, whom he married on Nov. 21, 1925, in Huntsville.
Survivors include his daughter, Orena Murphy Nelson; his brother, Walter "Pat" Murphy of Anaheim, Calif.; one sister, Thelma Pullin of Nevada, Mo.; one granddaughter, two great-grandsons, and 10 nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at Nelson's Funeral Home of Fayetteville. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville with Jeff Watson officiating.
