M.C. Bates (familiarly known as "Mack" Bates) was born in Tennessee January 28, 1837, moving to Missouri when a small boy. He grew to manhood in Dade County, Mo. and went to California when 20 years of age. He resided in the west, California and Colorado, until a few years ago when he came to Benton county, Ark., and bought a farm near Healing Springs where he resided since. He was as well as usual on the morning of January 17, 1909. About twelve o'clock of that day, while he was sitting in his chair, his daughter noticed that something was wrong. He expired in a few minutes. Thus ended the life of one of the good citizens of Benton county. He had for years been a member of the Christian Church in which he lived a consistent Christian life. He died the death of a good man. He leaves a wife, four children, three brothers and three sisters, besides many other relatives and friends who mourn. A large number of people attended his funeral at Temperance Hill where we interred his body. May God bless his family and friends and enable them to live to meet him above. R.E.L. Barden.
