BATES, J.F.E. - A number of Bentonville friends attended at Rogers Saturday morning the funeral of the Rev. J.F.E. Bates, a former pastor of Central Methodist Church at Rogers, who was well known here in Bentonville, the former home of his wife, who before her marriage was Miss Ora Torbett. Mr. Bates died suddenly Thursday afternoon at Sikeston, Mo. where he was serving as pastor. Some 20 or 25 years ago, at the time the Central Methodist Church building was constructed at Rogers, the Rev. Bates was pastor of that congregation and is well remembered throughout this section. The funeral services were held for him at his former Rogers church Saturday morning, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Ben C. Few and the Rev. W.M. Sherman of Fayetteville, assisted by two ministers from Sikeston, Mo. who accompanied the funeral party to Rogers. Interment was in the Rogers cemetery where a son, killed several years ago with a number of other young people in a West Plains, Mo. explosion, was buried two years ago after having first been placed in the Bentonville Mausoleum and later interred in the Torbett lot here. Besides his wife the Rev. Bates is survived by one daughter by a former marriage, Miss Mary Lou Bates, and by one son, William Bates. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. Kate Hagler, E.C. Torbett, D.H. Torbett and J.D. Torbett, of near Avoca and Rogers, and Attorney Eugene Torbett of Fort Smith, all of whom are formerly of Bentonville.

His mother was formerly Miss Ora Torbett, the daughter of the late Rev. J.H. Torbett of Bentonville. The body was brought to Bentonville where interment was made in the city cemetery Sunday. Mo Ashley, son of J.D. Ashley who formerly lived in Bentonville, was also in the building when the explosion occurred. He had been visiting in Kansas City and had just returned to West Plains where it was reported he was soon to be married to a young lady who was killed in the accident. Mo was blown out of a window into the street below but escaped serious injury.
