Company D 126 American Expeditionary Forces
World War I
December 28, 1895 - October 26, 1918
Killed In Action
Born Henderson, Baxter County, Arkansas.
Died France.
Son of Joseph G. & Ellie Dunn Payne.
The Baxter Bulletin, Mountain Home, Arkansas, January 17, 1919:
Everett Payne, age 23, son of Mrs. Ella Russell of Hand, Arkansas, died in the last days of the fighting.
The Baxter Bulletin, Mountain Home, Arkansas, November 28, 1921:
The body of Evert Payne, killed in France, is being returned. Burial was in Hand Cemetery.
(Note: The newspaper article was incorrect in that his burial was in the Hand Cemetery. He was originally buried in France, and then his remains were returned to the United States and buried in the Herron Cemetery. Prior to the impounding of Lake Norfork, his grave along with all the other graves in the Herron Cemetery, was relocated to what is now known as the Custer-Herron Cemetery. That relocation took place in 1943.)
