John Preston Payne, age 38, of Norfork, Arkansas, died Tuesday, January 4, 1898. He was born July 24, 1859, to William H. Payne and Dollie E. Boyd Payne and had lived his entire life in the North Arkansas area.
Mr. Payne married Mary Elizabeth 'Mollie' Taylor on September 28, 1879.
He is survived by his wife; mother; four sons, William Mitchell, George Preston, James Monroe and C.M. Bryan Payne; two daughters, Maggie 'Ollie' and Maud Payne; three brothers, William James and George Payne; and two sisters, Mary and Katherine Payne, all of Norfork.
His father preceded him in death in 1870.
Burial was in the Galatia Cemetery.

The accompanying obituary was contstructed in March 2001, from information recorded in the family Bible of George Preston Payne, who was born March 25, 1883, and died March 21, 1973. The copied page from the Bible was supplied by Mrs. Vera Lane Reeves, Norfork, Arkansas, a Payne family researcher.
It is recorded in the Bible that 'G.P. father, John Preston Payne, July 24, 1859, Jan 4, 1898, Norfork, AR, Galace Cemetery'. It is also recorded that 'Mother, Mary Ann Taylor Payne Trotter, June 2, 1859, died Jan 29, 1941. Buried McGee, OK, 81 yrs, 2 mo, 21 days old.'
