*Helen Virginia Appleby Young, 91, died Sunday, May 28, 2006, at Butterfield Trail Village in Fayetteville. A member of a pioneer Washington County family, she was born July 17, 1914, in Fayetteville to Gertrude and George Appleby and grew up at 324 N. College Ave.
She attended the University of Arkansas where she, with her three sisters, was a member of Chi Omega sorority, and earned a bachelor?s degree in home economics. On September 28, 1937, she was married to Paul Young Jr. She was a loving provider and homemaker for her husband and four sons. She was a lifelong member of Central United Methodist Church, a member of various Circles of the United Methodist Women, and active in civic organizations including Chapter S, PEO. She especially enjoyed playing bridge, playing golf and entertaining her many friends and family members. Helen Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul Young Jr.; her son, Charles A. Young; her brother, John Tate Appleby; and two sisters, Marion Manlove and Mildred Mitchell. She is survived by two sons, Paul Young III and his wife Angela, Thomas C. Young, and Robert S. Young; and her sister, Annis A. Fogleman. In addition, she is survived by nine grandchildren, Sloan and Paul Young IV, Bryn Y. D?Agostino and her husband Deric, Tate, Kathryn Ann, Cameron, and Chandler Young, Baylor and Avery Young; by two great-grandchildren, Ana and Grayson D?Agostino; and many loving nieces and nephews. The family is especially grateful to Ebie Mitchell Matula and Dell Fogleman and John Tate Mitchell for their care and devotion to their Aunt Helen. Helen Virginia will be forever loved and sorely missed by her family and by her many friends.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Moore?s Chapel in Fayetteville. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. J. Anthony Holifield and the Rev. Gary B. Lunsford officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the PEO Foundation, in care of Susan Ball, Chapter S, 1 Texas Way, Fayetteville AR 72701; or Washington Regional Hospice, 34 Holt Square, Fayetteville AR 72701. Pallbearers are Hayden McIlroy, Robert G. Whitfield, Kenneth B. Ball, D. Malcolm McNair Jr., Scott Lunsford and Gumbo Madison. The honorary pallbearer will be Clarence H. Young.
