Jake C. Merritt, 83, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at Baptist Hospital-Oxford after an extended illness. He was born Oct. 14, 1923, in Camden, Arkansas, to the late Benjamin F. and Syble D. Burton Merritt. He lived most of his life in Camden where he was a retired carpenter with the Tutt Construction Company and a tree farmer. He and his wife moved to Tupelo in 1996 to be near their son and his family. Due to failing health, he recently moved to the State Veterans Home in Oxford. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran with service during World War II. He received the Good Conduct medal, the American Campaign medal and the World War II Victory medal. He was a longtime member of the Fairview United Methodist Church in Camden where he had served on the Administrative Council, the Trustee and the Pastor-Parish Relations Committees. Locally, he was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. He enjoyed his farm, his farm pond, and fishing and hunting.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fairview United Methodist Church in Camden, Arkansas with the Rev. Jerry Cross officiating. Burial will be in the Bethesda Cemetery. Holland-Harris Funeral Directors-Tupelo Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Betty McAdoo Merritt of Tupelo, whom he married June 4, 1948; a son, Steve Merritt and wife, Jill, of Tupelo; two granddaughters, Leslie Merritt attending Milsaps College in Jackson and Whitney Merritt attending the University of Mississippi in Oxford; a sister, Opal M. Taylor of Memphis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sons, Lloyd C. Merritt on July 27 , 1976; a sister, Thelma Cranford; and two brothers, Charlie Merritt and Ben Merritt.

Pallbearers will be the men of Fairview United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be from 3:30 to 6 p.m. today at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland-Harris and from 2 p.m. until service time on Tuesday at Fairview United Methodist Church in Camden.

Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 1600 Clayton Ave., Tupelo, MS 38801 or to Fairview United Methodist Church, 2603 Mt. Holly Road, Camden, AR 71701.
